The Functional Approach to Yoga
This is about the physical asana practice. Where as the common sense in yoga and us human beings as a visually driven species our yoga is widely seen as an aesthetic body performance, which is all about how a pose should look, to master a pose. In the functional approach to yoga the focus is on how does a pose feel for YOU, on your unique body. As all asanas, the physical yoga poses wether this is yin or yang have a target area in your body. The part where you want to feel the pose primarily. As each and every body is different, every class shows the huge variety of skeletal variations, in Steffi’s classes you will find yourself safely guided to find your pose, your personal alignment in each pose.
Yoga is about you. It’s your body, your practice. With teaching from a functional approach in Steffi’s classes everyone benefits the same, regardless of what level you are as you will find the yoga that suits you.
To teach yoga from a functional approach it is important to know human anatomy and to encourage the students to feel their way into the pose and free the mind from any image there might exist of something like a perfect pose. Steffi has great anatomical knowledge, she studied over 500hr on anatomy and still ongoing with her teacher Paul Grilley, who is worldwide renowned anatomical expert not just to yoga. With teaching from a functional approach Steffi creates an environment for every student to practice yoga with awareness, safely and to benefit holistically - that’s where the magic of yoga begins.
